Improved online authentication methods are needed to address the root causes of cyber crime, anonymity and untraceability of net citizens. Fingerprint scanners are among the most popular biometric methods, but require tamper-proof hardware if they are to be used in a remote authentication context. In order to remedy this shortcoming, we propose a position and identity verification system that can be multiplexed onto a running passive optical network (PON), without any need for software nor electronics on the client side. The system consists in a coherent OTDR and a number of planar Bragg grating based sensors for detecting pressure from finger ridges. The COTDR is a conventional design but dimensionned for centimeter spatial resolution, whereas for the fingerprint sensor we adopt a line scanner configuration consisting in Bragg gratings connected by on-chip delay lines. Our considerations show that such a system would meet EPON and GPON requirements, with reach extensions up to 60 [km] possible.
